The Habits of Happiness Newsletter

October 2022 Edition

Jonah Paquette, PsyD

In case you missed it the first time around (these days, most of us get more than a few emails to say the least!), I wanted to resend this month's Habits of Happiness Newsletter. I created this newsletter to share interesting resources on the science of happiness, along with updates about my writing, speaking, and other projects. If you missed last month's September newsletter and want to catch up, click here. I also included a cool extra resource below that wasn't included last time around, so scroll down to check it out. As always, thanks so much for being with me on this journey!

Update of the month:

Last week, I had the chance to talk about the science of awe with some Google X employees – we explored the impact of awe on creativity, well-being, and much more. It was a great time, and it’s always a lot of fun to branch out and connect with different sorts of audiences. I also had the chance to be interviewed a few weeks back for a piece on therapist.com on the importance of setting healthier limits and boundaries with social media and the news. Click here if you’d like to check it out!

In the meantime, it’s been great getting back in the swing of things leading in-person talks around California. I’ve been presenting a series on the treatment of anxiety disorders in partnership with the Institute for Brain Potential – we’ve still got some spots open for our remaining dates, so click here if you’re interested in attending one of these live events! And as always, if you’d like to learn more about upcoming speaking dates, I try keeping an up-to-date listing of these on my website. And if you’re interested in bringing me in to your organization to give a keynote or workshop, click here.

Upcoming Book reminder:

As a reminder, my newest book Happily Even After will be coming out on December 6th! Click here or on the image below to order your copy today.

Quote of the month:

“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” – Oprah Winfrey

I’ve always loved this quote from Oprah…for years I’ve often joked that she’s done more than any of us in the field to promote the importance of gratitude to the public, but I think it’s true. When we foster a sense of appreciation in our own lives, and express it to those around us, amazing things really do happen.

Picture of the month:

This pic is from a recent trip Kelly and I took to Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, way up at the northern tip of California. It was a bit more rainy than we expected (though those of us in California know we need it!), but so magical to be surrounded by these ancient giants. Some of the tallest trees in the world reside in these parks, many topping 300 feet tall and thousands of years old. Look how small we are next to it!

Article of the month:

There’s been a lot floating around about the phenomenon known as “quiet quitting,” which refers to people employees becoming less engaged at work and no longer going above and beyond at their jobs. While there’s been lots written about this subject, I think that this take on it, from Jen Fisher (Chief Well-Being Officer at Deloitte) particularly hits the nail on the head. She provides a nuanced view, highlighting that what many call “quiet quitting” may for some people simply be a redirection of their energies towards other areas of life – their hobbies, their families, their side hustle, you name it. Moreover, she describes how we might collectively come together to better address the overall question of well-being in the workplace, to create new workplace norms that enable us to better flourish both personally and professionally. Check out the article below, and subscribe to her Substack to learn more about the awesome work she’s doing.

Book rec of the month:

As you know, my book Happily Even After will be coming out on December 6th (yay!). But if you’re in the mood to get 2 new books that day, and I certainly hope you are, I can’t recommend more strongly that you check out the newest book by my friend and colleague Seth Gillihan. Seth is a renowned expert on the integration of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness. He takes complex topics and makes them easy to understand and engaging. I had a chance to check out an advance copy of Seth’s upcoming book (Mindful Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and was blown away by how useful and personal it was. In fact, I’ll share here what I wrote in endorsing Seth’s book, and really hope that you’ll consider getting a copy of his fantastic new book:

"Beautifully written and touchingly personal, this superb book is destined to help countless people. Whether you’re struggling with depression or anxiety or simply want to achieve greater purpose and meaning, this is a must-have book.”

Skill/Handout of the month:

Inspired by our recent trip to the ancient redwoods of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, I thought you might enjoy these instructions for “Forest Bathing,” adapted from my upcoming book Happily Even After. Did you know that forest bathing can lower our blood pressure, promote our relaxation response, and even strengthen our immune system? Click the link below to learn more about it!

Thank You of the Month:

I’d like to give a shout-out to the wonderful Lisa Ferentz, founder of the Ferentz Institute and author of Finding Your Ruby Slippers: Transformative Life Lessons from the Therapist’s Couch. Not only did Lisa recently invite me to give a talk on awe at her Institute, but she was kind enough to write a blurb for my upcoming book Happily Even After. I was so touched by these words, and wanted to share them with you here. And if you want to check out some of the awesome work Lisa is doing (she’s a nationally-recognized expert in trauma), click here.

“A wonderfully written, perfectly timed book! Never have we needed the reflections and exercises Jonah generously provides to access and increase meaningful happiness more than right now! A practical, powerful guide that introduces and deepens experiences of compassion, gratitude, mindfulness, connectivity, kindness, awe, self- care, and other essential practices that can help all of us live life to the fullest while still honoring, respecting, and comforting the ongoing challenges that confront us.” – Lisa Ferentz, LCSW-C

Bonus feature of the Month:

I wanted to pass along this really cool brief podcast episode from the Greater Good Science Center on how to awaken joy...it's only 10 minutes long and can brighten your day!

What's on tap:

As the calendar turns to October, that can only mean two things: the start of fall, and the start of another season of New York Knicks basketball. Those who’ve attended my talks and read my books know that I’m a long-suffering fan of this once-proud franchise. So please send any positive vibes you can spare into the universe and let’s hope it’s a good year for us! In a couple of weeks, we’ll be squeezing in one last camping trip this season at a beautiful spot called Samuel P. Taylor State Park. It’ll be great to relax once again among the trees, and spend a bit of time away from the hustle and bustle of life. As John Muir said, “and into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.”

Stay in touch!

Thanks so much for signing up for my newsletter, and look forward to sharing more fun updates with you in the time to come. I'd also love to connect with you on social media, so feel free to use the links right below to connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. And of course check out my website as I'll be adding some online courses, updates on my podcast, and other fun updates as well.
